What Are Your Favorite Romance Books Tropes?

August 08, 2022

Emmanuelle Snow romance author books tropes

Romance books tropes. Oh, I feel like we could discuss those for months. There are readers who only read books with a certain trope. Other who just don't care as long as the story is catchy.

Strangers-to-lovers, fake relationship, surprise baby, snowed in, friends-to-lovers, enemies-to-lovers, are you overwhelmed already?

Again, I found this article which describe them in more details if you're curious.

Maybe I should start with a list, no?

  • Friends to Lovers
  • Forced Proximity
  • Snowed in
  • Fake Relationship
  • Enemies to Lovers
  • Neighbors to lovers
  • Marriage of Convenience
  • Second chances
  • Accidental Pregnancy
  • Secret Baby
  • Second Chance Romance
  • Small town
  • Military
  • Single dad
  • Age gap
  • Hidden identity
  • Celebrity
  • Damsel in distress
  • Bully
  • Mafia
  • Brother's Best Friend
  • Motorcycle club
  • Childhood best friends to lovers
  • Rock stars
  • Billionaires
  • Vacation
  • Cowboys
  • Shifters

And these are just a few.

Do you have more to suggest? Which romance book tropes you love and aren't in the list above?

Tell me.

Do you prefer when romance books combine multiple tropes (ex: brother's best friend + secret baby + small town) or do you like when it deal with one major trope?

I sure have a few favorite ones, but as a reader I'm not choosing based only of the trope. And I often find when all tropes are told beforehand that it removes some of the magic of reading a book and not knowing what to expect and how the story will unfold.

If the surprise pregnancy happens at 50%, well, I don't wanna know before I start reading. Does it make sense? Do you agree?

That's why I prefer non-specific tropes like military or rock stars or small town or second chances romance, this way it preserves the mystery.

As an author, I don't plan tropes before writing, they kind of just happen. And then I have to figure out which ones fit best. It would be so much easier if my brain thought in reverse sometimes! (facepalming myself haha)

If you could read one or two romance tropes for the rest of your life, what would they be and why?

Happy reading.

Fall (head over heels) for Small Town Romances!⛰️

March 31, 2025

I haven't read a lot in the last few weeks (but I've read Icebreaker - have you?), and returned to watching TV instead. My favorite shows so far? Tracker (which I'm currently watching with Mr. Snow at night once the kids are in bed), High Potential (which was pretty addictive, but can we talk about the 2 cliffhangers at the end of the first season? I'm so ready for season 2 lol), and The OC that we watched as a family.

(Emotional Romance) Book Hangover

January 19, 2025

Are you one of those readers who like to read emotional books that stay with you well after you read the last page (Hello Book Hangovers!) or are you a what's next on my TBR kid of reader?

Have you ever read a novel for like 6 hours straight only to forget all about the storyline or the name of the main characters by the next day? Even under torture and brain raking, you just couldn't recall any of it at all? Yeah, I'm sure it happened to all of us at least once (if not multiple times). And there are those books that no matter what you do, you can't forget them (even under torture! *insert winking emoji here*). Those that leave you with a book hangover that's hard to move away from.
